Dry Shampoo: A Review

What is Dry Shampoo?  Someone asked me this a few days ago and I had to try and figure out how to explain it.  Merriam-Webster defines dry shampoo as a shampoo in powder form, used without the addition of water.  Many of the dry shampoos now are actually  liquid that dry into a powder finish.

I am a licensed cosmetologist, so I went to my local supply store and picked up 5 of the top name brand dry shampoos I could find.  Redken, Biolage, Big Sexy Hair, Kenra, and Moroccan Oil.

Before I rank 1 to 5 I’ll give you my opinion on each product.   I looked at the smell, the weight of the product after application, the feel on my scalp, and how well it lasted.

Redken Pillow Proof, 3.4oz and costs $20.  The smell was nothing fabulous.  It actually smells like hairspray. Depending on if you like that smell it’s not so bad.  It was very light weight. If you have fine hair like mine this would probably be a good product for you to use.  This product was almost too light for me. I either should have applied more, or it just wasn’t for my hair.  So since I either didn’t have enough or the product isn’t good for MY hair, it didn’t last very long.  You could see oil throughout my hair later that morning.  The feel  I’ll be honest I never really felt like I had the product on at all.

Matrix Biolage Dry Shampoo.3.4 oz . Costs $17.  I was excited to test this out.  It’s called  Waterless, clean and recharge, dry shampoo for oil control.  Yes, I know dry shampoo is for oil control already but I was thinking this was going to be more targeted for hair types like mine.  The smell was great.  It was refreshing, like people wouldn’t be able to tell you haven’t washed your hair in 4 days.  It was light weight as well but enough to hold all my oil and not be too heavy.  The feel was good also.  I felt the product on my hair but it was never bad.  I wasn’t itchy or felt too dry.  It lasted most of the day so that’s always good.

Big Sexy Hair. 3.4 oz. Costs $18.  I think this stuff smells either like hairspray or like artificial apple.  I know, crazy.  Maybe I haven’t had my coffee yet but really try it out.  This product it once again light weight but when applied has good coverage.  It felt fine for a while but then I became itchy with this product.  My scalp didn’t like the chemical make up.  It didn’t last all day either.

Kenra Platinum Dry Shampoo. 5 oz. Costs $22.  The smell is sweeter than the other shampoos.  It’s a clean smell so it helps with hiding your dirty hair.  It’s light weight.  But this product when applied to my hair left it a bit flaky.   I later became itchy.  It lasted all day but I was uncomfortable.

Moroccan Oil. 5.4 oz. Costs $26.  When you apply this product it has a clean smell. It’s a tiny bit heavier than the other products but it’s not too bad.  I think it may feel heavier just because it starts as a wet product but dries really fast and almost is applied dried.  It’s a toned product so you can get it for dark tone and light tones. So it’s a bit tinted.  It feels dry.  Even when you apply it on your hair it goes from wet to dry super fast.  It lasted all day also.

Ranking from 1-5, my 1 being the best.  Please remember these are in preference to my hair so this is not how they will work on yours.

1- Moroccan Oil, I love the drying consistency and how fast you can put it on and go.

2-Matrix Biolage, The smell is probably the best part. (wish my daughter didn’t use the entire bottle in one sitting)

3-Kenra, as much as I didn’t particularly like the product it lasted all day which is a big deal to me.

4-Big Sexy Hair,  smell is a big deal to me.  It was light weight and the cost is on the lower end.

5-Redken,  This product was just too light for my hair, and didn’t help control the oils.

So I wanted to test out a homemade dry shampoo to see how it tests with the competition.

DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe.  I think this product needs a bit more testing than the time I had.  It’s harder to put on so make sure you get a good shaker.  It’s smells AMAZING! It’s almost weightless, and it feels cooling when you apply it.  The catch to it was that I didn’t feel I either used enough or it just didn’t absorb my oils so it lasted maybe an hour.  If you like more natural or cheap things this is the way to go.  You can tint this to your hair color. I didn’t since i’m blond, but overall it’s a good product.

So don’t give up if you haven’t found a dry shampoo you like I promise you will find one.
